Topic overview
The storage location is the smallest logically possible organizational level within the warehouse organization. A storage location belongs to a warehouse and warehouse zone and is identified within it on the basis of a row, a level and a location. If more than one storage unit can be put away in a storage location, then a storage location is further structured into slots.
Every storage location must have a storage location type assigned. The storage location receives its properties with the assignment. These properties include, for instance, the storage location type, the priority and the maximum number of storage units allowed for the storage location.
This article describes how to query for storage locations of any warehouse zone according to their allocation, usage and storage location priority using the Storage location query application.
Instructions on how to use the Storage location query application, e.g., how to query storage locations, can be found in the article Procedures: Storage location query.
Definitions of terms
ABC storage
ABC storage classifies items by their turnover rate. If ABC storage is activated by specifying a storage location overrun rule, then items are put away in storage locations with an ABC classification that agrees with the ABC storage of the item.
Storage unit
Storage unit is a general term for the storage and packing materials used during storage, transport, and shipping of an item. Storage units are managed as items with material category Storage unit.
Warehouse organization
Warehouse organization determines the structure of a warehouse or warehouse zone. Using warehouse organization, warehouse structures such as simple warehouses, high rack storage areas, and bulk storage can be mapped.
Warehouse
A warehouse is a logically or physically defined area in which item inventory is maintained. A warehouse is always assigned to a site. A warehouse can be subdivided into storage locations if storage location control is enabled in Customizing. The exact structure of the warehouse is defined by the warehouse organization.
Storage location
A storage location is the exact point in a warehouse where items can be stored. A storage location within a warehouse always lies in a warehouse zone and is determined precisely on the basis of a row, a level, and a storage location number. Each storage location has a storage location category that establishes the use of the storage location. The availability of storage locations is essential for storage location control.
Storage location types
The storage location type is an important characteristic of a storage location. Attributes pertaining to a storage location type include, e.g., absorption capacity and presence of storage unit. The ABC classification and maximum permitted weight are also determined by the storage location type.
Warehouse zones
If storage location control is activated in the Customizing application, a warehouse can be subdivided into warehouse zones. A warehouse can have any number of warehouse zones.
Warehouse zone allocation
The warehouse zone allocation specifies the organizational allocation of a warehouse zone. Possible allocations are: receipt of goods, issue of goods, picking, reserve, and inventory count differences. When a warehouse zone is divided into storage locations, these storage locations must have a storage location type that agrees with the allocation of the warehouse zone. A warehouse zone without specified allocation can have both reserve locations and picking locations.
Application description
Using the Storage location query application, you can query storage locations for any warehouse zone according to the following criteria:
Each criterion corresponds to one view in the application. In all views, the application consists of a query pane and a work pane. The colors in the presentation of the query results are differentiated according to the view.
Display of the results
By allocation
In the By allocation view, the allocation of storage locations is presented according to the color scheme that reflects their filling status. The filling status of a storage location can have one of three values that are defined as follows:
- Empty: the storage location does not have any item inventory.
- Filled in part:
- Storage location without storage unit: the current inventory of the storage location is lower than its capacity
- Storage location with storage unit: not all its slots are utilied
- Full:
- Storage location without storage unit: the current inventory of the storage location is equal to or higher than its capacity
- Storage location with storage unit: all slots are utilized
- Blue – the storage location has open receipts or issues that will lead to a change of the filling status
- Green – the storage location has the Empty filling status
- Yellow – the storage location has the Partially filled filling status
- Red – the storage location has the Full filling status
- Dark green – the storage location has the Full filling status, but only empty storage units are stored.
If the storage location is not usable or if it is blocked by an inventory count, the number of the storage location is displayed with strikethrough.
The change of the filling status (blue color) always has the higher display priority.
In the two examples below, the storage location is shown in blue:
- Two full storage units are put away in a storage location of the Storage location with storage unit category. For the storage location type, a maximum count of two storage units was defined. An inventory order for withdrawal of one of the two storage units has the Generated status. After reporting of the inventory order, the filling status will change from Full to Partially filled.
- A storage location of the Storage location without storage unit category does not have a current inventory. An inventory order for the put-away of 100 pieces has the Generated status. After reporting the inventory order, the filling status will change from Empty to Full if the storage location capacity amounts to 100 pieces.
In the example below, the storage location is shown in yellow:
50 kg of an item are put away in a storage location of the Fixed location without storage unit category. The capacity of the storage location is 150 kg. Even in the case of an open issue of 10 kg, the storage location is shown in yellow because the filling status (Partially filled) will not change as a result.
By storage location priority
In the By storage location priority view, the priority of the storage location is presented according to the following color scheme:
- Orange – the storage location is usable and has the priority entered in the Storage location priority field.
- Light orange – the storage location is usable, but it does not have the priority entered in the Storage location priority field.
If the storage location is not usable or if it is blocked by an inventory count, the number of the storage location is displayed with strikethrough.
By storage location category
In the By storage location category view, the storage location category of the storage locations is presented according to the following color scheme:
- Orange – the storage location is usable and has the storage location category entered in the Category field.
- Light orange – the storage location is usable, but it does not have the storage location category entered in the Category field.
If the storage location is not usable or if it is blocked by an inventory count, the number of the storage location is displayed with strikethrough.
By storage location type
In the By storage location type view, the storage location type of the storage locations is presented according to the following color scheme:
- Orange – the storage location is usable and has the storage location type entered in the Type field.
- Light orange – the storage location is usable, but it does not have the storage location type entered in the Type field.
If the storage location is not usable or if it is blocked by an inventory count, the number of the storage location is displayed with strikethrough.
Query pane
The query pane contains fields to determine the desired storage locations.
The field contents are described in detail below.
Warehouse – in this field, enter the identification of the warehouse where the desired storage locations are located. the warehouse organization must permit the allocation of the storage locations. First enter the available warehouses in the Warehouses application.
