Topic overview
The Cockpit: Cost types application is described below. This application is used primarily for querying cost types as well as their postability and plannability plus their status information within controlling.
Next to optional dimensions, cost types constitute the second pillar of controlling. In controlling, no transactions are possible without an underlying cost type. For more information on cost types, refer to the article Cost Types.
Application description
All cost types that meet the search criteria are displayed. The application consists of a query pane and a work pane.
Query pane
Query fields are placed in the query pane. The most important query fields are usually already present. However, the number of query fields and their placement can vary. You can determine which query fields are displayed.
All important query fields are listed below. If more fields are added, you will find their full description in the help document of the related application in each case:
Detailed description of query pane fields:
- Cost type – specification of the cost type to be displayed.
- Cost class – specification of the cost class to be displayed.
- Description (Cost type) – enter a description as a search criterion. The description serves as an additional distinguishing characteristic and consists of user-defined text. The same description can exist more than once. The system displays all entries corresponding with the entered description.
- Type of cost type – the type of cost type defines the type of data for which the cost type can be used. The following settings are available:
- Costs
- Revenues
- Quantities
- Ratios
- Rates
- Miscellaneous
- Usable in controlling – if this field is activated, the cost element is usable in controlling. A cost type may only be used in controlling if it is defined as usable.
- Usable in financial accounting – if this field is activated, the cost element is usable in financial accounting. A cost type may only be used in financial accounting if it is defined as usable.
- Usable in asset accounting – if this field is activated, the cost element is usable in asset accounting. A cost type may only be used in asset accounting if it is defined as usable.
- Usable in ERP – if this field is activated, the cost element is usable in ERP. A cost type may only be used in ERP if it is defined as usable.
- Postable – this input specifies how the cost type to be selected can be posted. Possible values:
- All
- Without restriction
- Postable with restriction
- Not postable
- (Other)
- Plannable – this input specifies how the cost type to be selected can be planned. Possible values:
- Plannable
- Not plannable
- Plannable with restriction
- (Other)
- Deletion marker – you can search for cost types with a deletion marker and for cost types without a deletion marker. To do so, select one of the following entries:
- All
- Marked as deleted
- Not marked for deletion
- Calculative posting – the checkbox will be activated automatically if the cost type is defined for an active calculative posting.
- Calculative cost type – a calculating cost type may not be posted directly. It is used only as a target post type of a calculative posting.
- Classification 1 – here, you can make a selection of the cost types that are to be selected. The selection criterion is classification 1 of the cost type.
- Classification 2 – here, you can make a selection of the cost types that are to be selected. The selection criterion is classification 2 of the cost type.
- Classification 3 – here, you can make a selection of the cost types that are to be selected. The selection criterion is classification 3 of the cost type.
- Classification 4 – here, you can make a selection of the cost types that are to be selected. The selection criterion is classification 4 of the cost type.
- Classification 5 – here, you can make a selection of the cost types that are to be selected. The selection criterion is classification 5 of the cost type.
- Quantity mandatory – if the quantity mandatory is activated, a quantity must be entered for each posting with this cost type. The Quantity field then becomes mandatory.
- Quantity posting – the checkbox will be activated automatically if the cost type is defined for an active quantity posting.
- Status (Cost type) – status information on the cost type.
Work pane
The work pane has a table in which the queried cost types are displayed.

Customizing
The Cockpit: Cost types application does not need any specific settings in the Customizing application.
Business entities
The following business entity is relevant for the Cockpit: Cost types application that you use, for example, in order to:
- Assign authorizations,
- Set up activity definitions or
- Import or export

Authorizations
Authorizations can be assigned by means of authorization roles as well as through a content-based authorization (by assignment to organizations). The authorization concept is described in the article Authorizations.
Special capabilities
The Cockpit: Cost types application has no special capabilities.
Organizational assignments
Organizational structures are used to control which data can be viewed, used, or edited. The Content-based authorizations function must be activated in the Customizing application for this purpose.
To ensure that the Cockpit: Cost types application is displayed for a person in the user menu, the user must be assigned to an organization that is connected to one of the following organization structures:

The Cockpit: Cost types application is not released for business partners.
