Generate storage locations

Topic overview

The storage location is the smallest logically possible organizational element within the warehouse organization. The storage location is addressed on the basis of row, level and location. If the storage location can accommodate more than one piece of storage unit, the storage location is further subdivided into slots.

This article describes how to create multiple storage locations in the Generate storage locations application using a batch application with a single process. You can edit the created storage locations using the Storage locations application. Instructions for creating storage locations can be found in the article Procedures: Generate storage locations.

Definitions of terms

ABC storage

ABC storage classifies items by their turnover rate. If ABC storage is activated by specifying a storage location overrun rule, then items are put away in storage locations with an ABC classification that agrees with the ABC storage of the item.

Inventory owner

The inventory owner is the legal possessor of the specified warehouse inventory. The inventory owner is used for many inventory management processes, for example, inventory counts and inventory valuation. For certain business processes, it may be necessary to specify the inventory owner in order to determine whose inventory is used or considered in a process.

Warehouse organization

Warehouse organization determines the structure of a warehouse or warehouse zone. Using warehouse organization, warehouse structures such as simple warehouses, high rack storage areas, and bulk storage can be mapped.

Warehouse

A warehouse is a logically or physically defined area in which item inventory is maintained. A warehouse can be subdivided into warehouse zones and storage locations if storage location control is enabled in Customizing. The exact structure of the warehouse is defined by the warehouse organization.

Storage location

A storage location is the exact point in a warehouse where items can be stored. A storage location within a warehouse always lies in a warehouse zone and is determined precisely on the basis of a row, a level, and a storage location number. Each storage location has a storage location category that establishes the use of the storage location. The availability of storage locations is essential for storage location control.

Storage location types

The storage location type is an important characteristic of a storage location. Attributes pertaining to a storage location type include, e.g., absorption capacity and presence of storage unit. The ABC classification and maximum permitted weight are also determined by the storage location type.

Storage zones

If storage location control is activated in the Customizing application, a warehouse can be subdivided into warehouse zones. A warehouse can have any number of warehouse zones.

Application description

You can use the Generate storage locations application to create several storage locations of a storage location type in a single operation.

The application consists of an identification pane and a work pane.

Identification pane

The identification area contains the fields to identify the warehouse zone for which storage locations are to be created.

Available fields:

Warehouse – in this field, enter the identification of the warehouse with the warehouse zone for which you want to create storage locations. The warehouse organization of the warehouse must allow the use of storage locations.

Warehouse zone – in this field, enter the identification of the warehouse zone for which you want to create storage locations. The warehouse organization of the warehouse zone must allow the use of storage locations.

Warehouse organization – the warehouse organization of the warehouse zone is displayed in this field. This can be one of the following warehouse organizations:

  • High rack storage area – the warehouse zone is divided into rows, levels, and locations
  • Bulk storage – the warehouse zone is divided into rows and locations
  • Locations only – the warehouse zone is only divided into locations
Note
It is not possible to create storage locations in the Simple warehouse warehouse organization.

Work pane

In the work pane, you enter the start and end values for creating the storage locations depending on the warehouse organization of the warehouse zone. If the warehouse zone is to have gaps in the addressing of the storage locations, you must either create the storage locations in several processes or then delete the storage locations that are not required in the Storage locations application. If a storage location already exists, the storage location is skipped when it is created. Existing storage locations are therefore not replaced.

The input fields are described in the following sections:

Section Identifications and generation areas

Avaiable fields:

Row from/to – use these fields to define an area in which storage locations are to be created and the identifications of the rows if they do not yet exist.

Note
The necessary components of a storage location identification depend on the warehouse organization selected for the warehouse or warehouse zone. Row identification is necessary for the warehouse organizations High rack storage area and Bulk storage, but not for Locations only.
In the first field, enter the identification of the first row in which storage locations are to be created, and in the second field the identification of the last row. A row identification can have a maximum of three digits (0-999).
You can also select in the Fill row identification with zeros field whether the row identification should be filled with leading zeros. Please note that a storage location in row 1 and a storage location in row 01 are not identical but are two different storage locations. If a row identification does not yet exist, it is generated by the system taking into account the setting for adding leading zeros.
Note
If a storage location already exists, the [Generate storage locations] action has no effect on this storage location. This means that you cannot change existing storage locations using the Generate storage locations application.

Fill in row identification with zeros – Row identifiers have a maximum of three digits. For the specified row range in which storage locations are to be created, you can choose whether the row identifiers are to be filled with leading zeros. Select one of the following entries:

  • Do not fill – the identifications in the entered range are processed as entered. New identifications to be generated correspond to the entered pattern without leading zeros.
  • Fill with one zero – the identifications in the entered area are filled with zeros to two digits if required
  • Fill with two zeros – the identifications in the entered area are filled with zeros to three digits if required

Level from/to – use these fields to define an area in which storage locations are to be created and the identifiers of the levels if they do not yet exist.

Note
The necessary components of a storage location identification depend on the warehouse organization selected for the warehouse or warehouse zone. The level identification is necessary for the High rack storage area warehouse organization, but not for Bulk storage and Locations only.
In the first field, enter the identification of the first level in which storage locations are to be created, and in the second field the identification of the last level. A level identification can have a maximum of two digits (0-99).
In the Fill level identification with zeros field, you can also select whether the level identification should be filled with leading zeros. Please note that a storage location in level 1 and a storage location in level 01 are not identical but are two different storage locations. If a level identification does not yet exist, it is generated by the system taking into account the setting for adding leading zeros.
Note
If a storage location already exists, the [Generate storage locations] action has no effect on this storage location. This means that you cannot change existing storage locations using the Generate storage locations application.

Fill level identification with zeros – level identifications have a maximum of two digits. For the specified level range in which storage locations are to be created, you can choose whether the level IDs are to be filled with leading zeros. Select one of the following options:

  • Do not fill – the identifications in the area entered are processed as entered. New identifications to be generated correspond to the entered pattern without leading zeros.
  • Fill with one zero – if required, the identifiers in the area entered are filled to two digits with zeros

Location from/to – use these fields to define an area and the identifiers of the storage locations that are to be created. In the first field, enter the identification of the first storage location, and in the second field the identification of the last storage location to be created. A storage location identification can have a maximum of five digits (0-99999).
You can also select in the Fill storage location identification with zeros field whether the storage location identification should be filled with leading zeros. Please note that with identical row and level identification, a storage location 1 and a storage location 01 are not identical but are two different storage locations. A storage location identification is generated by the system taking into account the setting for adding leading zeros.

Note
If a storage location already exists, the [Generate storage locations] action has no effect on this storage location. This means that you cannot change existing storage locations using the Generate storage locations application.

Fill storage location identification with zeros – storage location identifiers have a maximum of five digits. For the specified storage location area in which storage locations are to be created, you can choose whether the storage location IDs are to be filled with leading zeros. Select one of the following options:

  • Do not fill – the identifications in the entered area are processed as entered. New identifications to be generated correspond to the entered pattern without leading zeros.
  • Fill with one zero – the identifications in the entered area are filled with zeros to two digits if required
  • Fill with two zeros – if required, the identifiers in the area entered are filled with zeros to three digits
  • Fill with three zeros – the identifications in the recorded area are filled with zeros to four digits if required
  • Fill with four zeros – the identifications in the recorded area are filled with zeros to five digits if required

Section Storage location settings

Available fields:

Type – in this field, you define the type of storage location to be created.

Note
Ensure that the storage location type aligns with the usage of the warehouse zone. For instance, if the warehouse zone usage is Picking, you should only create storage locations with the type Picking location without storage unit.
You can modify the storage location type of individual storage locations later using the Storage locations application.

Usable (checkbox) – use this checkbox to specify whether the newly created storage locations are usable or not.
If the storage location is not usable, it is not taken into account during putaway. However, inventory in a storage location that cannot be used is taken into account during withdrawal.

Note
You can also post receipts manually to storage locations that cannot be used.
You can change the usability of individual storage locations in the Storage locations application.

Inventory owner origin – this field allows you to specify how the inevntory owner for the storage locations will be determined. The options include:

  • As per warehouse zone data – the inventory owner defined for the warehouse zone will be used for the new storage locations
  • As per storage location data – you directly define the inventory owner for the storage locations. If this is selected, you must enter the partner identification of the desired inventory owner in the Owner of inventory field.
  • Dynamic – the inventory owner is not determined when the storage location is created but is identified later based on reservations or putaways.

Owner of inventory

  • If According to storage location is selected in the Inventory owner origin field, enter the partner identification of the inventory owner for the new storage locations.
  • If According to warehouse zone is selected, the inventory owner of the selected warehouse zone is displayed. If no inventory owner is specified, or Dynamic is selected, this field remains empty.

Priority origin – this field determines how the priority for the new storage locations will be set. Selectable options are:

  • According to storage location type – if the selected storage location type has a defined priority, it will be applied to the new storage locations.
  • According to storage location data – you define the priority directly for the storage locations to be created. If this option is selected, you will need to enter the desired priority in the Priority field.

Priority

  • If According to storage location is selected in the Priority origin field, you can manually enter the storage location priority in this field, which can be a capital letter or a number.
  • If According to storage location type is selected, the priority from the storage location type will be displayed here, provided it is defined.

Use this action to start creating the storage locations according to your specifications. In the Storage location query application, you can display the result of the generated storage locations.
